Hunt the Alien: Seconded to the Deathwatch

Ahoyhoy internets, DaveHowitzer here once again with some hobby for a change.

-Good lord, I hear you cry, the chap has gone insane, some hobby talk on a 40k blog, this is heresy!-

Well for those of you that remember, last week I posted my thoughts on building a new Imperial army in response to the way 5th edition has treated my beloved Deathwing. After a lot of thought I realised that I didn't fancy making my own chapter, becuase I have such a connection with my Dark Angels -as cheesy as that sounds- So what to do, what to do. I moved to my second love, the Daemonhunters, but I realised there that I just wanted to make the characters in my DH game into an army on the table top...and besides...Daemonhunters competative? Nahh

So then it hit me. I love the Inquisition, and what's ALMOST as cool as Grey Knights and ISTs? The Deathwatch.

So I have chosen a theme, now how about the Codex. After a review of the theme (largly thanks to the FFG book which is insanely good) I decided to go with C:SW for a couple of reasons:

1) Deathwatch Kill Teams are groups of highly specialised veterans, thus they should be equipped as such, thus within each unit there should be a greater variety of weapon/armour options.

2) Each Kill Team has a team leader, which can perhaps be portrayed better by a Wolf Guard than a simple Sgt.

3) I LOVED the idea of the Black Shields in the Deathwatch: Members that whilst in the service of the Ordo Xenos have lost their chapter either due to annihilation or rebellion - they are the last of their kind and thus work alone, which is super awesome cool. I really grabbed onto that concept of the last survivor of the dead chapter, or the lone loyalist in a Chapter of traitors. Lone Wolves are the perfect embodiment of this concept.

4) It's Space Wolves...I wonder why...duh. They are pretty awesome.

So on that note, before we start here is a list with some explaination

So, before anyone mentions anything yes, no TWC. I am making a stand against one of the best units in the codex I know. I love them, the concept of them, however it really doesn't fit with the Deathwatch theme. (Come on, Alien hunters riding big Aliens??? REALLY???) So what we have going on here is a little torrent of fire list, with 16 Missile shots, some las/plas action, little bit of melta action and some flamer goodness (an art that seems to be lost on most people making 5th ed lists, though I still think the humble template weapon has its uses in this edition, what with cover being...well....everywhere) it seems like a nice little list to me -well...lets face it, I only have Eldar to compare this with atm.

Rip it apart, eat it, chew it, spit it out and light it on fire.

Though...Dave's Deathwatch will be coming in the very near future you mark my words.

Love, Dave

    Can do.

To start with most of your units were undercosted. :P

Moving forward, I'd drop all 3 speeders. Then I'd get rid of all the Wolf Guard (for now). Turn all your Grey Hunter squads into this:

    5 Grey Hunters w/ Flamer
Razorback w/Lascannon and Twin Linked Plasma Gun
    150

Right. From here, give both of your Lone Wolves chainfists. So they can kill... well, everything. Let's bring back the Wolf Guard. 3 of them with 2 combi meltas to be precise. We'll put them in a Lasplas razor.

Right that's you got about 140pts to burn. So if we throw in a typhoon and 2 more long fangs with missiles we'll be at 1504. To get under that I'd drop one Lone Wolf's chainfist down to a Power Fist.

    1499.

  4. Oh and TWC (while good) aren't the be all and end all. Not including them isn't some great heroic gesture saying FU to the metagame. Lol. But anyway...

I do think that this list would work better fully mechanised. At the moment it's doing hybrid (which does work) but I think full on mech works better at 1500. Mostly because at 1500 you can still take totally viable mech slots without hampering yourself. Above 1500 you start running out of room. Or rather, you get a lot more. Meaning you can happily run a solid mech core backed up by a good amount of infantry.

Just a suggestion. If you did want to run proper hybrid i'd probably put in some TWC. :3
